Tips for Including Siblings in a Newborn Photoshoot (Even If They Don’t Want To!)

Adding big brothers or sisters to a newborn photo session can be really sweet. It helps tell the story of your growing family and creates memories you’ll always treasure. But let’s be honest—older siblings don’t always want to join in. And that’s okay!

As a newborn photographer, I’ve worked with lots of families. Some siblings are super excited. Others are shy, nervous, or just not in the mood. I totally get it! That’s why I use a few simple tricks to help kids feel more comfortable and have fun during the session.

Here are my favorite tips:

Talk About It Ahead of Time

Before the newborn photo session, parents can talk to their older child about what’s going to happen. Say something like, “We’re going to take special pictures with the baby. You’ll be a big help!” This can help them feel important and more ready to join in.

It also helps to show them photos of other kids with babies, so they know what to expect.

Start With the Sibling Photos First

Little kids get tired or bored quickly. So I like to take sibling photos at the very beginning of the session. The baby is usually swaddled and sleepy, and the sibling is still fresh and more likely to join in.

Even if they’re unsure, I always try to keep things quick and gentle.

Make It Fun and Easy

Some kids don’t like being told to “smile.” So instead, I play little games. I might ask, “Can you find the baby’s toes?” or “Can you give baby a soft high-five?” This makes the session feel more like play than a chore.

If they don’t want to touch the baby, that’s okay! We can take photos with them just sitting close by.

Bring a Treat (It Helps!)

I always tell parents to bring a small treat or prize for after the sibling photos. It can be something simple like mini marshmallows, a fruit snack, or stickers. Kids love rewards, and it gives them something to look forward to. I do recommend waiting until the end to give it to them though, as sometimes they don’t want to give it up when we still need family photos.

I also keep a little box of goodies in my studio just in case!

Take Breaks When Needed

If a sibling is having a hard time, we take a break. They can have a snack, play with a toy, or hang out with a parent while I focus on the baby.

Sometimes, after a short break, they’re ready to come back and try again—and those later photos often turn out great!

Look for Real Moments

Not every photo has to be posed. Some of the best pictures happen when a sibling is just watching the baby, sitting nearby, or gently touching their head. These real moments are full of love and personality.

Cheer Them On!

During the newborn photoshoot, I always tell siblings how great they’re doing. Saying things like “Wow, you’re such a good big sister!” or “That was a perfect hug!” helps them feel proud and happy. If they are getting in to trouble for not cooperating them may resist doing it.

In the End…

Every sibling is different, and that’s what makes your family special. Whether they’re smiling, being silly, or even a little unsure, we’ll work together to capture sweet memories that show the love between your kids.

So if you’re worried about how your older child will do—don’t stress! I have lots of tricks, and most of all, I have patience. We’ll make it a fun and relaxed experience for everyone.
